Victorian period reversible micro mosaic depicting King Charles Spaniel / the Doves of Pliny mounted in 18kt gold on a chain.
Made in England, circa 1870.
A quite fine Italian Micro Mosaic plaque set in an 18 Karat Gold bezel mounting, engraved with a stylized egg and dart band enclosed with a grooved edge and centered on a foxtail chain. The tiny tesserae of glass, meticulously rendered, depicts the Capitoline Doves of Pliny. The image is reproduced often in Classical imagery, originally taken from an Ancient Greek floor mosaic at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, the Doves symbolic of Peace and Plenty. The reverse, of equally fine mosaic hand work, depicts a prone King Charles Spaniel in a Naturalistic setting.
